30 Seconds To Mars Almost Didn't Finish 'Kings And Queens' Video

Jared Leto-directed short film 'The Ride' premieres online Thursday morning.

When 30 Seconds to Mars sat down to talk with MTV News on Wednesday evening about their upcoming album, This Is War, they were less than 12 hours away from the premiere of their much-anticipated "Kings and Queens" video. But there was a problem: They hadn't finished editing it yet.

"I'm not quite done with it, which is sort of worrying," frontman Jared Leto laughed. "I may look slightly tired, because I've been in the editing room late, late night finishing some of the post [production]. But yeah, right now, we're still not done."

Somehow, Leto — who directed the "Queens" video under the alias of Bartholomew Cubbins — managed to finish the final cut, and at around 3:30 Thursday morning (November 12), the clip made its world premiere on 30 STM's MySpace page. Clocking in at just under nine minutes, the video is officially dubbed "The Ride," and the opening credits call it, "A Bartholomew Cubbins film inspired by the song 'Kings and Queens.' " As it follows the band and an army of extras (creatively pierced bike messengers, fire-breathing mimes, etc.) on a triumphant critical mass bike ride through Los Angeles, the clip is every bit as epic as you'd expect from Leto and Co., who have previously gone to the ends of the Earth to make great videos — er, "short films."

"We've been to the People's Republic of China and made a 14-minute-long short film [for the song 'From Yesterday']," Leto noted. "And then we went to the Arctic, and sat on top of icebergs and glaciers that were crumbling beneath our feet [in the video for 'A Beautiful Lie']. So we figured to go to another destination, it would start to be like we're working for the Travel Channel or something, so it was time to turn the camera on our hometown, to basically make a love letter to Los Angeles and to celebrate that side of the world."

Despite the long nights and days lost in the editing bay, 30 Seconds to Mars had a blast making "The Ride." But next time, perhaps someone needs to remind Leto that there are deadlines involved in these things.

"This video was actually a lot of fun to make ... it was really hard work, but we got to be home, and we showed a part of Los Angeles most people don't get to see," 30 STM guitarist Tomo Milicevic said. "And, as a director, Jared knows how to make things look really beautiful. He's got a good eye for it ... I just hope he can finish the thing now."

Actor-musician Jared Leto and his certified-platinum band 30 Seconds to Mars have been keeping busy, readying their third album, This is War, for release on December 8th. But not so busy they can’t play with Manhattan’s punks and paparazzi. It’s all in a day’s work for the hardcore heartthrob.

“You’re kidding me,” says Jared Leto, grabbing his forehead at the terrible news: New York’s Union Square—where, for many locals, downtown begins—will be the proud new owner of a T.G.I. Friday’s. “I remember when Babies ‘R’ Us first arrived in the neighborhood,” he says. “On one hand, it was like, This is the end. On the other, it was nice to see people weren’t afraid to do business here.” Fans who know and love Leto from his days as Jordan Catalano on television’s My So-Called Life might be similarly ambivalent about the actor’s transformation into a mascara-wearing rocker. But it’s nice to see he’s doing business, too, especially when it momentarily looked like his band, 30 Seconds to Mars, might not get the chance. Comprised of Leto, his brother Shannon (the band’s drummer) and Tomo Miličević (lead guitar), 30 Seconds almost fell apart after Virgin Records sued them for $30M for allegedly refusing to honor their three-album contract. “It was hell,” he says, “But it’s over. This Is War is kind of like a celebration.”

San Loco is New York’s only real taco place. I was living here off and on for quite some time, a long, long time ago, in 1991. [My brother] Shannon lived here in 1993, in Alphabet City. I used to come here at all hours. It’s one of my favorite places: easy, cheap and good. It can stand up to the Mexican food in L.A.

Balthazar feels like an authentic French restaurant. It’s not like Café Gitane, when you feel like you’re in New York. It more or less takes you there. Their food is so consistent and solid. I’ve been coming here for years. I go in the off-hours—it’s open all the time, and it’s even more beautiful when it empties out, especially during the day, when fewer people are here.

I’ve been trying to get Shannon to go here for so long. I’ve been telling him forever that they need to open one in L.A. Now they’re opening two in L.A. Habana has a special charm to it. You’re crammed in there with a ton of other people—models, locals and tourists. It’s crowded, but there’s just a good energy, you know? I often go to the takeout counter next door when it’s too crowded. I’ve got to get some plantains.

30 Seconds To Mars frontman Jared Leto has spoken to Rock Sound about the band's forthcoming UK show at London's Koko venue on November 16.

The singer has promised fans it will be more than just a showcase of new material from new album 'This Is War'.

“I think it’ll be more like saying ‘hello’ to old friends and maybe doing a few new songs as well," he admitted. "I think it will be more on the informal side. We’re just coming back to really say ‘hello’ and play a few of the new songs. I don’t think it will be like, ‘Here’s the brand new album, and we’re going to play every song on it’. We’re coming back to see old friends and I’d like to keep it as informal as possible, really. We could all stop and talk about things, but I guess that’s difficult in a venue like that!”

'It was a time to redefine, rediscover, reinvent, reinvest in each other,' Jared Leto says of This Is War.

By their own admission, 30 Seconds to Mars went to hell and back to make their new album, This Is War, so you can't blame them for being a little hesitant to talk about the process. Sometimes, words aren't enough.
"I don't know what to say. We spent two years of our lives working on that record, and it was us against the world. We didn't have outside influence or help, we didn't have a label, we had us, betting the farm, and pushing ourselves," frontman Jared Leto sighed. "There were times that it was overwhelming. Everything that was going on was brutal, but there were beautiful moments as well. There was so many outside influences that were in conflict that working on the record was actually quite peaceful. It was a case of survival, to tell the truth."
he two-year battle that surrounded War has been as well-documented as the album itself, and now, with the December 8 release date quickly approaching, 30 Seconds to Mars are ready to put the past behind them and start talking about the future. "It's terrifying that the album is so close. There's so much going on in my head," Leto laughed. "One thing that I know is that this record is really the best that we can do. It's everything that we have inside of us. It's our complete commitment, it's our complete abandonment, our blood and our bones and our heart and our soul, and everything. Everything we have is in this record, so that's what we have to say. ... Regardless of what anyone thinks of the record, we made the record we set out to make. ... Who knows if anyone in the world will like it or not? That's to be determined."
And while there's plenty of time to talk about the somber, icy songs on War, the important thing to mention right now is that the record is done, there's a video due to premiere and 30 Seconds to Mars made it out alive. It's time to celebrate, really. "We were literally having to kill ourselves at times. I had it written on the wall: 'Kill yourself to finish.' There were no other options," Leto said. "So we did that. It was a time to redefine, rediscover, reinvent, reinvest in each other. We thought about this record in a very deep way, and it means a lot to us. ... Music can just be fun, but it can also do more, mean more, and that's just what it is for us, I suppose."

30 Seconds To Mars' This Is War Preview: A Huge, Open Expanse

Band's new LP is massive and shiny, but also cold and empty, in Bigger Than the Sound.

ere is the best way I can describe 30 Seconds To Mars' This Is War, an album born out of rather intense struggles and big ideas, one loaded with icy synths and screaming falcons, epic chorales and windswept sonic expanses (and the occasional Tibetan Monk): Listening to it is like being inside a gigantic silver weather balloon, one ascending into the upper reaches of the stratosphere. It is massive and shiny and beautiful, but also cold and empty.

That's not meant to be a slight — actually the opposite. War is a shimmering epic of an album, to be certain, but as is often the case when big rock bands strive to go even bigger with their sound (the most obvious example I can think of here is Angels & Airwaves), they often create these kinds of shiny balloons: big, lustrous things filled with oddly chilly space.

In 30 Seconds to Mars' case, they up the empty by coating every song in icy, mercury-slick synthesizers. Sure, there's the occasional guitar line lifted from the U2 songbook, too (the Edge is quickly becoming the patron saint of these kinds of projects, it would seem), but War is, on the whole, a very icy listen, which seems odd considering that more than half its tracks also feature group vocals, a sundry of chants and "Whoa-Oh-Oh"s and "Fight! Fight! Fight!"s recorded at various fan-only "summits" the band held around the globe.

It's an idea that would seem to invigorate the album, instilled it with a beating heart and pumping blood — but, strangely, it doesn't. For all the humans and emotions involved in its creation, War remains an alien-feeling thing, like its veins are filled with liquid nitrogen.

And it's quite possible bandleader Jared Leto wanted the album to feel this way. After all, he went to hell and back to get it made — staring down a $30 million lawsuit from Virgin Records, shouldering the load (and the majority of the recording expenses) himself. One can imagine that there were stretches where he felt totally, completely alone in his struggle, like he was living life in lunar solitude.

And that's what comes across in the album. A feeling of isolation is certainly present in War's finest moments — the bleak, ominous "Hurricane," on which Leto screams "Where is your God?" and asks the listener "Do you really love me?" or "Alibi," which starts with a somber piano line and builds on a constantly twisting guitar helix or, most notably, "Stranger in a Strange Land," a dark, sadistic song that stretches to seven minutes, pulses along on churning beats and chiming tubular bells, and features Leto breathing "Enemy of mine/ I'll f--- you like the devil."

On "100 Suns," he proclaims "I believe in nothing/ Not the earth and not the stars," while on "Search and Destroy" he rasps "Found my faith/ Living in sin/ I'm not Jesus/ Neither are you my friend."

So yeah, it sounds like Leto was going through some things, which is why talking about This Is War's empty feeling is more of a compliment than a slight. Working alongside noted space-maker Flood (U2, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins), Leto has created a sonic void to match the songs' lyrics — which makes the feel of album even more admirable, especially if you like challenging, fearless art.

And that's really what War is — a conceptual piece, a great open expanse where Leto can bury his deepest secrets, can scream his fears into the void. That he's chosen to include his massive fanbase in his isolation was bold, brave, potentially crazy and potentially disastrous (there's a lot riding on this album, after all). You can debate that point endlessly, but here's one you can't: it's also an incredibly human thing to do. Because we're all alone, even if we don't realize it just yet — it's our most unifying trait, really.

Which is what makes This Is War a rather brilliant, bracing listen. It's the soundtrack to cold, empty hearts, to the lunar landscapes inside us all. Is it the work of a sadist? A genius? A lonely man? Possibly all of the above. If only all big rock albums had this much nerve.

30 Seconds To Mars' 'Kings And Queens' Video: Watch An Exclusive Preview! (new trailer!!!)

Thirty Seconds To Mars have already gone to great lengths to make sure that their "Kings and Queens" video is a thoroughly epic production. They've filmed in and around some of Los Angeles' most iconic landmarks, recruited scores of extras and all manner of surrealist street performers to make cameos. So naturally, they want to roll the thing out in an equally epic manner.

Last week, they unveiled a 30-second teaser trailer for the clip, one that features a fire-breathing clown and an army of gasmask-wearing bicycle messengers patrolling the streets of L.A. And now, they're unveiling a second teaser video: right here, right now.

On Monday (November 9), Jared Leto sent MTV News a 30-clip — called, appropriately enough, "The Horse" — that shows a majestic white stallion galloping in slow motion down a deserted city street. It's a startling, eye-popping image, one only amplified by the soundtrack: a chorus of young voices, chanting in unison (we can assume it was recorded earlier this year at 30STM's fan "summit" in Hollywood. At the end of the video, we are told that the video for "Kings and Queens" is "coming soon."

It's not known if the horse — or the clown from the earlier teaser trailer — will actually appear in the final version of the "Kings" video, but we're pretty sure the bike messengers will ... mostly because we were on hand last month when 30STM filmed the segment.

"We're doing all-night shoots. That was my big, dumb idea, to shoot at night," Leto told MTV News. "But I think this city is a beautiful place at night, and we have these empty streets, and it's kind of a haunting, forgotten landscape. It's been an incredible adventure, but it's also been really difficult, because there are so many people, and we're shutting down streets of Los Angeles."

The stage is certainly set for a comeback. Anyone who’s not part of the swooning fanbase 30 Seconds to Mars gained with their 2005 multi-platinum sophomore effort, A Beautiful Lie, is just as likely be aware of the band’s high-profile falling out with their label for non-payment of royalties and subsequent re-signing to them as they are their music.
As it happens, the episode – turmoil, followed by a slightly flat resolution – handily foreshadows This Is War. It’s an album that should roar into life and bristle with righteous indignation, but instead perpetually plays it safe and consolidates the status quo.
The slow building intro of Escape is a dawdling set up for frontman Jared Leto’s breathy, nondescript vocals to be overtaken by a choir of their fans bellowing the album title in a compressed, overproduced delivery that robs it of any urgency. The seed of their angst has been planted, but it quickly sounds played out and affected.
The squelching electro-pop of first track proper Night of the Hunter comes with more gang vocals, which appear throughout like units neatly dropping off a production line. Lyrics as hackneyed and tautological as its refrain – “Honest to God I will break your heart / Tear you to pieces and rip you apart” – immediately start opening cracks along the thin ice on which they perform their pirouettes.
Elsewhere, the sheen of leadoff single Kings and Queens can’t disguise that it’s a song about the end of humanity that sounds anything but apocalyptic. Several tracks later, on Vox Populi, we’re still getting the ‘include the fans’ sleight of hand underpinning vague angst that reverberates so much there’s no room for any substance, just a stomp-stomp-clap motif that sounds hastily borrowed from Queen’s We Will Rock You.
People who want more of the same will enjoy the bittersweet, saccharine rush of their quiet-loud-quiet delivery as it pops up in blockbuster movies where everything turns out alright in the end, but taken as a whole This Is War sounds like its creators have tried to create a sense of drama and failed, dramatically.

"It’s funny, you sit in a laboratory and you cook up a batch of songs and who knows if anyone is ever going to like them," he pondered recently. "Love them or hate them? They are all possibilities and you get a certain reaction depending on who you play them for. The reaction we’ve received so far has been overwhelming, enthusiastic and supportive. It’s been pretty incredible. We are very grateful for that."

The singer was also impressed with Rock Sound's select listening party and had the following to say about the event:

"To play them the song was a great and wonderful thing to do. Wow, really, thanks for that."

30 Seconds To Mars talk about 'This Is War' & hint an Australian tour!

Following up on their incredibly successful sophomore release, A Beautiful Lie, multi-platinum rock band Thirty Seconds To Mars are hard at work rehearsing for their live show that will soon bring to life ‘This Is War’, their highly anticipated upcoming album, in to a live spectacle which guitarist Tomo Miličević says will hit Australia in 2010!

This Is War, produced by Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails), Steve Lillywhite (The Rolling Stones, U2) and Thirty Seconds To Mars, is set to hit retailers world-wide on December 4 featuring the first single Kings and Queens.

“The feeling is of intense excitement,” says Tomo. “Also a little bit of…I don’t want to say anxiety but a little bit of anxiety too... We wanted to capture that spirit and energy that we have at our performances on the album.”

In an innovative and exciting move, Thirty Seconds to Mars’ upcoming release, This Is War, will have a limited run of 2000 different album covers featuring individual photos of fans from around the world.

“It’s no secret now that we are a band that absolutely embraces and adores our fans,” says Tomo of the concept. “We include them in anything and everything we can because obviously without them we wouldn’t be what we are. They’re the reason we get to do half of what we do. Who cares about a bunch of guys who write songs; it’s the people who listen to the songs and give us the opportunity to play them live.”

Thirty Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Shannon Leto (drums) and Tomo Miličević (guitar) teamed up with their fan community, The Echelon, earlier this year to record sounds for the upcoming record in a groundbreaking event they dubbed, “The Summit”. The band invited The Echelon members to travel to Los Angeles to take part in an impromptu recording session at Hollywood’s Avalon Club. It was so successful that since then Thirty Seconds to Mars decided to hold summits in 8 more countries across the world (Australia, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, Mexico, United Kingdom, Canada) in order to give their biggest supporters an opportunity to be a part of their new album.

“When we heard it for the first time, mixed and finished, we all looked at each other and we’re were like, ‘Wow, that’s something else’. That’s almost the most interesting part on the album”.

“This record, if you’re heard it you know we really went for it. To play it live, it’s going to be a lot of work. Not impossible but just a lot of work. We really set a high bar for ourselves. It’s proving to be a lot of work, but that’s ok, we’re not afraid of that.”
And Tomo also hints a national Australian tour is in the works. “We will definitely come back to Australia! I just can’t say when.”

Alt-rockers 30 Seconds to Mars [ tickets ] have unveiled a slate of late-fall dates that coincide with the forthcoming release of their long-awaited new album, "This Is War."
The 10-date outing, which begins Nov. 30 in Salt Lake City, kicks off a week before the record's Dec. 8 release date. The Los Angeles-based band will celebrate the album's drop with a show in Baton Rouge, LA, followed by three stops throughout the Midwest. The full schedule is shown below.

"This Is War" marks the group's third studio set and first since 2005's "A Beautiful Lie." One of the new record's tracks, "Kings and Queens," is currently streaming at the band's website.
Led by actor/singer/guitarist Jared Leto, 30 Seconds to Mars worked with producers Flood (Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails) and Steve Lilywhite (The Rolling Stones, U2) on the new effort.
The band also mobilized their fan community, known as The Echelon, inviting them in April to Hollywood, CA's Avalon Club for an impromptu recording session dubbed "The Summit." Hundreds of fans enjoyed the opportunity to contribute vocals and percussion to the new record and, because the experience was so successful, the band decided to host, though not attend, eight more summits over the summer months in countries around the world, including Australia, Italy and Mexico, among others.
"There's something magical that happens when a group of people come together, a group of strangers, and they share a public experience," Leto said in an interview with Kerrang magazine. "We then harness that energy, that collective consciousness, and apply it in a musical way."

Rock Sound recently invited a select group of 30 Seconds To Mars diehards into the office to listen to the band’s new single ’Kings And Queens’. Is it the band’s breakthrough moment? We’ll let those who know best tell you…

We’ve just played you ’Kings & Queens’ for the first time. What are your initial reactions?
Lisa: “Wow!”
Nicola: “Haunting, my first thought was, ‘It’s haunting’. It was awesome, everything we wanted and more.”

You all feature on the track but, at the time of recording, that was the only part of the song you were able to listen to. How was it recording vocals without knowing what they were going to be used for?
Lisa: “We went to the [UK] summit and they recorded what Jared and the rest [of the band] had done. So basically, Jared would sing certain lyrics and we would have to sing the same ones.”
Nicola: “It was all very official and kept hush, hush. They checked us when we were going in to make sure we had no recording equipment.”
Clare: “While we’re on the subject of the summit, I was one of the ones who couldn’t make it but there was something called a digital summit. They posted on the website clips that they had recorded, so you could hook up your webcam and make a short video of yourself singing that part as well. Somehow they’ve gone worldwide and put it all together on a track. It’s phenomenal really.”

Did being invited to sing on the record feel like a payback? Do you feel like it’s the band’s way of saying thank you?
Clare: “I wouldn’t like to feel like they owe it to us.”
Piewacket: “They came over for some awards last year just to say, ‘Thanks for voting for us’. They involve us all the time.”
Nicola: “They come into the chat rooms sometimes and talk to us on there. I can just imagine all of us at a live show – 6,000 people singing the new song! Every country has a national anthem, every football team has an anthem, this is ours.”

How do you think the song will do commercially?
Piewacket: “It really depends on the video because it’s a whole package, but I think it’s a stand-alone song anyway.”
Lisa: “It really is quite catchy.”
Nicola: “In my mind I’m still humming it.”
Clare: “It’s going to get a lot of airplay.”
Piewacket: “And it’s not emo!”
Clare: “It’s not heavy at all.”
Sue: “It’s going to reach a much wider audience.”
Clare: “I think I speak on behalf of all the Echelon here, everything that the band have done in terms of meeting their fans at gigs and going that extra bit further for the signings and things like that, I wouldn’t expect them to do that much with this record. It’s so global and for them to reach the people that they want to reach they’re going to be hopping from one place to the next so quickly. Just be happy and take the music for what it is. Don’t just be a fan thinking, ‘Oh, I’m going to get to meet Jared’ because it really is just amazing music. Just listen to it.”

What do you think ‘Kings & Queens’ says about the album? Is it making you more excited?
Sue: “Totally, I can’t wait!”
Clare: “There has been talk about DVDs and short videos, and Jared is quite a genius when it comes to putting a story in pictures to his songs.”
Nicola: “All of his songs are chapters which create a book and ‘Kings & Queens’ is in the middle, so what’s at the beginning and what’s at the end?”

'Kings And Queens' will be released on November 30 with album 'This Is War' to follow on December 07.

Seit ihrer Gründung vor gut einem Jahrzehnt produzieren Sänger und Gitarrist Jared Leto und seine Band 30 Seconds To Mars kraftvollen, melodiös getriebenen Alternative Rock. Schon immer strebte der charismatische Frontmann eine internationale Karriere als Musiker an und spätestens seit ihrem zweiten Album A Beautiful Lie von 2005, in Zuge dessen sie über 500 Konzerte rund um den gesamten Globus spielten, gehören 30 Seconds To Mars zu den Speerspitzen der US-Rockszene.

Am 4. Dezember erscheint das mit großer Spannung erwartete dritte Album This Is War. Zuvor wird das Quartett für zwei exklusive Showcases nach Deutschland kommen: Am 13. November gastieren sie in der Kölner Kulturkirche, am 20. November im Berliner Astra.

Jared Leto gilt nicht nur als fantastischer Sänger und Performer, sondern auch als einer der talentiertesten amerikanischen Schauspieler der letzten Jahre. Dabei zog Leto 1992 mit dem Vorsatz nach Hollywood, Interessierte für seine musikalischen Ambitionen zu finden. Stattdessen lief zunächst ungeplant, später dann gezielt forciert seine Schauspielkarriere an. Auf drei Fernsehserien folgte 1995 das erste Kino-Engagement.

Seither drehte Leto zahlreiche von Kritik und Publikum hochbeachtete Kinofilme, darunter solche Genre-Klassiker wie Fight Club, Panic Room, American Psycho oder Alexander. Dabei war die mittlerweile internationale Schauspielkarriere für den 38-Jährigen aus Bossier City/Louisiana anfänglich nur ein Umweg, um seine Laufbahn als Musiker zu ermöglichen.

Mit seinem Schlagzeug spielenden Bruder Shannon Leto, mit dem er seit Kindesbeinen musiziert, gründete er 1998 30 Seconds To Mars. Bereits das selbstbetitelte Debüt, das die beiden Brüder im Alleingang aufnahmen, verkaufte sich in den USA über 100.000 Mal. Mit einigen Gastmusikern begannen sie eine bis heute nicht enden wollende Tournee durch zunächst kleine, später auch größere Clubs auf allen Kontinenten. In manchen Jahren spielte die Band mehr als 250 Konzerte.

Seit dem Erscheinen von A Beautiful Lie 2005 muss man 30 Seconds To Mars zu den bedeutendsten Protagonisten der zeitgenössischen Rockszene zählen. Weit mehr als eine Million verkaufter Tonträger des Albums, Platin-Veredelungen in USA und Italien sowie Gold-Auszeichnungen in Kanada, England, Australien und Südafrika belegen den internationalen Erfolg.

Mit den inzwischen fest zur Band gehörenden Musikern Tomislav Milicevic (Gitarre, Keyboard) und Tim Kelleher (Bass) spielten sie Anfang des Jahres unter der Produktion von Flood (U2, Depeche Mode) ihr drittes Album This Is War ein. Hierfür luden sie in acht Ländern zahlreiche Fans ins Studio, um am neuen Werk mitzuwirken. Diese Nähe zu ihren Fans demonstriert sich auch im Artwork der neuen Platte. Sie wird mit 2.000 verschiedenen Covern erscheinen, die allesamt Fotos zeigen, die Fans einsandten. Nur ein weiterer der vielen sehr besonderen Aspekte an 30 Seconds To Mars.
